I was born in Durham, North Carolina in 1957 and educated in our public schools, graduating from Northern High School in 1975. I graduated from Duke University in 1979, and Mercer University Law School, in 1983. Returning to Durham after law school, I engaged in the general practice of law, concentrating in criminal trial defense and real estate law. In 1985 I re-joined the Durham District Attorney's Office where I served as an Assistant District Attorney. In 1989 I was chosen as 1 of 2 Special Prosecutors designated to initiate investigative grand juries against drug trafficking organizations around the State. The most complex grand jury investigation I worked as lead prosecutor was the case initiated in Durham involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies which rounded up 50-plus drug dealers.

After being elected District Attorney for Durham in 1994, I worked with various agencies and individuals to bring innovative specialty courts to Durham including: Teen Court, Drug Treatment Court, Community Life Court, and Domestic Violence Court. To make the courts more efficiently function, I worked to create the felony case management system for Durham, a system which was ultimately adopted as the model for our state. In 2003 I was selected as a Lawyers Weekly USA Top Ten Lawyer and appointed as a Special Superior Court Judge in 2005.

On June 20, 2007, the Governor of North Carolina requested that I temporarily assume the duties and responsibilities as the Interim District Attomey for the Fourteenth Prosecutorial District of North Carolina to replace the recently disbarred Elected District Attorney of this jurisdiction. In response to this request, I agreed to resign my commission as a Special Superior Court Judge in order to serve my community in this sensitive and significant position during a very difficult time. Following the selection of a permanent replacement for the District Attorney, I was re-appointed to my position as a Special Superior Court Judge by the Governor of North Carolina on September 7, 2007. Subsequently, I was appointed as a Resident Superior Court
Judge by our Governor on September 22, 2009 to serve the unexpired term of Judge A. Leon Stanback upon his retirement.

I have also pursued a career in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Judge Advocate, having been commissioned in 1988. Since then, I have served as Trial Counsel and Defense Counsel, Deputy Staff Judge Advocate and Staff Judge Advocate for 2 distinct 2-star commands, Command Judge Advocate, Deputy Commander and Commander of a Legal Support Organization. I was mobilized with XVIII Airborne Corps during Desert Shield/Desert Storm and with Third Army, U.S. Central Command during Operation Iraqi Freedom. I currently serve as a Colonel in the Army Reserve.

I am married to Lori, my wife of 28 years. We have 3 children.
